Transport for London ‘to cut 1400 jobs’
According to some unions, Transport for London (TfL) has proposed to cut 1,400 jobs as part of plans to save £5.5bn by 2021.
The BBC reports that the RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “As part of the Mayor’s efforts to slash spending by £5.5bn by 2021 we are now being told that the company plans to cut up to 1,400 jobs in engineering in TfL and in some areas of LU. RMT demands that no cuts take place, so close to the King’s Cross fire anniversary. It would be appalling if there was any hacking back on safety. The Mayor needs to stand up for TfL and demand restoration of the full capital grant and proper central government funding for the Tube.”
TfL does not accept the number put forward by the RMT as at risk of redundancy and said it was “undertaking the largest ever overhaul of our organisation to provide the most efficient and cost effective transport service for Londoners”.

Redundancy is a fair reason for dismissal. However, a dismissal for redundancy may be unfair on general principles on one or more of the following reasons:
a) there was no genuine redundancy situation
b) the employer failed to consult;
c) the employee was unfairly selected;
d) the employer failed to offer alternative employment.
We regularly advise businesses and senior executives on all stages of the redundancy process including any settlement agreement terms, associated grievances and employment tribunal litigation.
If you are at risk of redundancy or dismissed on the grounds of redundancy, you should receive a statutory redundancy payment or alternatively, you may have a contractual entitlement to enhanced redundancy pay. You may also have a potential claim for unfair dismissal and/or discrimination.
